Even though as a homeowner, the construction of the chimney is not a subject you need to know, but it is something that you should understand the basics. A chimney is essential for anyone using a fireplace, wood stove or furnace. The proper chimney is made for the type of heating element being used and is the right size for the heating element. In addition, it is located in the right place which is through the area of the home being heated. Your chimney should be installed according to the building code and/or instructions from the manufacturer.

The proper installation of a chimney would mean your fires are easily lit and the draft safely carries the smoke away so that it does not go in the room. If your chimney is as it should be you should experience no smoke entering the room even when the door is opened and you are tending to the fire. A chimney is absolutely crucial to your woodburning heating system, whether it is an old-fashioned fireplace or a newer furnace system. A good chimney gets draftier the hotter it gets. The more heat that is produced, the more power behind the draft which carries the smoke up and out.

There are problems that may be experienced with a chimney. For example, you may experience cold air coming in when the fire is not burning. This is called a chimney backdraft and may be accompanied by an unpleasant smell. This is a common problem for chimneys build outside the house. To remedy it, install the chimney inside of the building. If your woodburning heat system gets smoke spillage, build straight up and do not put any turns in the flue pipe if possible. Issues like this really aren't something most people deal with as they are best handled by a professional contractor with experience in chimney construction and maintenance.

If you feel your current chimney construction isn't what it should be, you may want to hire a contractor to fix it for you. Updating your chimney can make your home more energy efficient and allow your heating system to work more efficiently. You may also need to have your chimney professionally cleaned and maintained on an annual basis to keep it functioning safely and to its best potential. Many people take their chimney for granted, but it is a very important part of the home.
